From Coinslot Cover Star to Global Jukebox Manufacturer: Celebrating 48 Years of Sound Leisure

On this day in 1978, Sound Leisure founder Alan Black appeared on the front cover of Coinslot International, the amusement industry’s leading weekly publication, announcing the launch of a new venture dedicated to providing specialist support and servicing for German jukebox manufacturer N.S.M.

At the time, few could have predicted what would follow. What began as a dedicated technical support service quickly evolved into something much bigger. Just two years later, Alan launched the first Sound Leisure branded jukebox, laying the foundations for what would become the world’s longest-established family-owned jukebox manufacturer.

Nearly five decades on, the market has changed dramatically. Today, Sound Leisure collaborates with some of the world’s most recognisable brands, and our handcrafted jukeboxes can be found in luxury private homes, hospitality venues, cruise ships, hotels, and entertainment destinations across the globe.

While much has changed since 1978, some things remain exactly the same. Every Sound Leisure jukebox is still designed and manufactured in Leeds, England, and the company continues to operate with the same family values, commitment to quality, and passion for innovation that inspired its founding.

Now aged 80, Alan Black remains actively involved in the day-to-day running of the third-generation family business. His enthusiasm for engineering, craftsmanship, and product development continues to shape the future of the company, with new product launches planned for later this month.
